How to tell when a log home needs attention.

Know where rot starts

Check the lowest courses, log ends at the corners, the wood under windows, and anywhere a deck or roof splashes water back onto the wall. Push a screwdriver in. Sound wood resists. Rotten wood gives.

Watch how water behaves

Splash a wall with a hose. If the water beads and runs off, the finish is still working. If the wood darkens and soaks it up, it’s time to wash and restain.

Sunny walls go first

South and west faces take the most sun and usually need stain sooner than the shaded sides. Shaded walls have their own problem: mildew. A good maintenance plan treats each side of the house on its own schedule.

Common questions

Can you replace one rotten log without rebuilding the wall?

In most cases, yes. The bad section is cut out, the wood behind it is checked, and a matching piece goes in. We’ll tell you after a look whether yours is a patch or something bigger.

Do you work on log siding as well as full logs?

Yes. Many cabins here are framed houses with log siding, and several of the jobs in our project photos are exactly that.

How often does a log home need restaining?

It depends on the product, the sun exposure and how well the last coat was applied. Use the water test: when the wood stops shedding water, it’s due.

Do you wash the logs before staining?

Yes. We offer pressure washing with chemical wash and water sanding, which is what gets the surface ready to take stain evenly.

Are you licensed and insured?

Yes. Mountain Area Recommended Contractors holds a State of Georgia business license and is fully insured. We’re also a member of the Home Builders Association of Georgia.

What areas do you cover?

Blairsville, Blue Ridge, Morganton, Cherry Log, the Ellijay area, Young Harris and the surrounding parts of North Georgia. If you’re close to any of those, call 678-457-1849 and ask.
